The MASU is a scientific association which was registered under French law at the Préfecture of the Bouches du Rhone in Marseille on November 18 th 1987.

Its main purpose is to promote ultrasound in African countries and to encourage exchanges between physicians in Mediterranean and African countries.

The official language of the MASU is English, but French and Italian are commonly used in scientific sessions and administrative meetings.

Today, the MASU has about 450 members from Algeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, France, Egypt, Spain, Greece, Italy, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Togo, Tunisia, Turkey, former Yugoslavia, Zaire, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

The MASU is a member of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) in the same way.
